Hidden Creek Guild — Safety & Family Communication
Overview only · Contact us for full documentation
This page is a general overview Full safety protocols, liability documentation, medical intake forms, and emergency procedures are provided to enrolled families directly. Please reach out with any questions before your child's first day.
Staff Ratio
Maximum 15 children with 3 instructors (1:5 ratio). All lead instructors hold current wilderness first aid or first responder certification. At least one staff member carries a fully stocked first aid kit at all times.
Fire Safety
Three core fire rules are reviewed every fire session. Children do not approach a fire without direct instructor presence. All fire skills (bow drill, flint & steel) are taught in progression with demonstrated readiness as the gate. Burns are treated immediately on-site; protocol escalates to emergency services if needed.
Water Safety
Creek and pond activities require closed-toe footwear. Children are briefed on water hazards at the start of every Water Day. No child enters water above knee height without direct supervision. Swimming is not part of the curriculum.
Foraging Safety
No child tastes any plant without adult confirmation of ID. Younger children (Seeds) do not handle or taste wild plants without direct one-on-one instruction. Known toxics on the property are mapped and communicated to staff each session.
Tool Safety
Knives and carving tools are introduced in a structured sequence. Each child demonstrates safe handling before using any blade independently. Tools are logged in and out each day and stored securely overnight.
Allergies & Medical Needs
A medical intake form is required before the first session. Allergy information is shared with all instructors. EpiPens and prescribed medications are kept in the first aid kit with parental consent forms. Dietary needs are accommodated on fire cooking days.
Emotional Safety
Children are never forced to participate in any activity. Opt-out is always available without judgment. Instructors are trained in de-escalation and trauma-informed outdoor education. Bullying or unkindness is addressed immediately and transparently with families.
Curriculum Flexibility
This curriculum is a sample framework. We adjust pacing, content, and activities based on your child's needs, learning style, and family feedback. Parents are encouraged to share observations — you know your child best. We schedule a check-in after the first week.
